GEORGE TOWN: A pistol belonging to a senior police officer was stolen when he was taking a nap at his house on Sunday.

The officer, a district police chief based in Kelantan, was sleeping during the 2am incident at Tanah Liat in Bukit Mertajam.

It is believed that he had placed the pistol on a table in the living room before falling asleep.

He lodged a police report after realising the gun was missing when he woke up.

Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said the pistol was a Walther P99 and that initial investigations revealed the thief entered the house via the front entrance.

“The case is being investigated for trespass or housebreaking under the Penal Code,” he said in a brief media statement.

Meanwhile, a source said the officier in question was on leave and was spending time with his family in Penang.
"He was on vacation, and had earlier gone shopping with his family in Penang.
"Upon returning home, he placed the pistol on a table," the source said.
The source added the officer realised the pistol was missing the moment he woke up.
Also missing were a sling bag and a magazine containing 15 bullets.
"Checks by the forensics team found the front grill had been prised open, which leads police to suspect it was a possible house break-in," the source added.
