29 protesters detained at #TangkapNajib rally

KUALA LUMPUR: The police have confirmed the arrest of 29 protesters at the #TangkapNajib rally which was held in front of Sogo shopping complex at about 2pm.
Kuala Lumpur (KL) police chief Commissioner Datuk Tajudin Md Isa said they were arrested under Section 143 of the Penal Code for participating in an unlawful assembly and Section 124 for assaulting Member of Parliament with intent to compel or restrain the exercise of any lawful power (insults against Prime Minister and Pekan MP Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak).
He added that the detainees were aged between 14 and 69, where six of them were female.
It was believed that two of them are PKR's Teja state assemblyman Chang Lih Kang and Simpang Pulai Adun Tan Kar Hing.
"All detainees will be brought to Kuala Lumpur Magistrate court for remand order," Tajudin said in a statement.
Tajuddin said the series of arrests begins at about 2.15pm.
Earlier, about 100 people clad in white shirts began to gather in front of the iconic Sogo Shopping Complex at about 2pm.
The crowd began screaming and demanding with for Prime Minister Najib Razak step down over allegations of corruption and misappropriation of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) funds.
The crowd were also heard chanting "Tangkap Tangkap! Tangkap Najib!" before the commotion broke out.
Police later confronted the crowd and arrested the mob.
Angered by the action, the crowd started to retaliate by lighting loud fire crackers in the midst of the gathered crowd where one of the reporters sustained a minor leg injury over the incident.
The chaos has also attracted curious onlookers, resulting in a massive traffic congestion along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman.
As of 2.30pm, Sogo and shops along the area has closed its operation and the main road was cordoned off by the authorities to ensure the public order.
Police managed keep the crowd in check at about 3.40pm where officers has used all communication medium available to urge the crowd to disperse.
Sogo and shops near Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman has continue its operations at 3.45pm, before a heavy rain broke out at 5pm.
The #TangkapNajib protest was organised by a group of youths calling themselves "Demi Malaysia".
