KUALA LUMPUR: Bank Negara needs to clarify the status of the RM2.6 billion in Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak's private accounts.
Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng said it is still unknown where the money came from, the purpose of it, how it ended up in Najib's accounts, where the money is currently and whether the transaction comply with all relevant financial laws.
"We want to know the transactions related to the RM2.6 billion in PM's account, how it got in and out. Was it in one lump sum or was it done in a few transactions?
"We want Bank Negara to disclose the source and purpose of the money, and as lawmakers we want to know if the transactions have complied with strict financial regulations under the law,' he told the press.
Lim, along with Rasak MP Teo Kok Seong, and DAP member and lawyer Zulhazmi Shariff lodged a letter of complaint at Bank Negara today.
Teo agreed that there are no laws regulating political funding currently but pointed out that Najib is still a public servant and is not allowed to receive any donations.
Teo said Najib owes an explanation to the public as the amount is so huge that it can be used to run Negri Sembilan, which annual budget is about RM400 million, for at least six and a half years.
Zulhazmi also questioned if Bank Negara had reported the transactions to relevant authorities as RM2.6 billion would surely have raised red flags.
