MH370: Focus of search will be narrowed down, says Hishamuddin

PETALING JAYA: With the latest leads on MH370, the focus of the search and charting of the missing aircraft in the Indian Ocean will be narrowed down, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.
However, he added the search will prove to be difficult due to the geomorphic of the earth where the wreckage could be, especially in getting the black box which could potentially determine what actually happened.
“With the leads we now have from Reunion Island, I think we can further narrow down the search area. I am confident it is not only being considered by the Transport Ministry under Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai but also experts from other countries, especially Australia and China.
“It’s not going to be easy because that’s the loneliest part of the planet ... in very deep waters. Not many equipment in this world can do charting on the seabed in those depths, but we have done it before,” he told a press conference at Defence Ministry today.
He said the debris found was more than a year after the flight went missing and experts must now identify the ocean currents, the time that has passed by, and where the aircraft could possibly be now.
He did not discount the possibility of broadening the search area if the situation required.
“Even if we need do it, at least we now know that the airline is in the Indian Ocean as was first thought. That, at least, is a relief to know.”
He urged the media to respect the privacy and give space to family members of the crew and passengers on board MH370 during this difficult time.
He assured the public that the Government is committed to doing everything within its means to find out what happened to MH370.
