PETALING JAYA: Motorists will get to enjoy toll-free access to the Damansara-Puchong Highway and Kuala Lumpur-Putrajaya Highway or Maju Expressway (MEX) on National Day.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the decision by both highway operators, Lingkaran Trans Kota Sdn Bhd (Litrak) and Maju Expressway Sdn Bhd, was in the spirit of Merdeka by absorbing estimated loss in toll collection.
"Motorists can drive through the toll plazas on these two highways without having to pay beginning from 12 midnight on Aug 31," said Fadillah at the Kesas, Litrak and Sprint Aidilfitri open house celebration at Litrak Operation Complex in Sunway today afternoon.
Asked if other highway concessionaires in the country would follow suit, Fadillah said: "It is a possibility but we'll see if other operators would announce it."
Association of Highway Concessionaires (PSKLM) deputy president Sazally Saidi said several highway operators are also mulling on giving Merdeka toll-free access.
"There have been discussions among the highway operators but let me just say right now, so far only two operators are offering. It is up to respective concessionaires to decide," said Sazally, who is also the Litrak CEO.
In addition, he said, a 20 sen toll discount will be provided to Sprint Expressway users on National Day at the toll plazas situated at Damansara Link, Kerinchi Link and Penchala Link.
Around 589,000 users on LDP and Sprint will get to enjoy this on Aug 31 with an estimated loss in toll collection of RM700,400 for Litrak.
At the same event, Fadillah gave out Hari Raya gifts to 57 orphans from At Taqwa Homes in Puchong.
