SEPANG: The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Customs Department seized 17.84kg of ketamine and methamphetamine worth RM3 million on three separate occasions and arrested three Indian nationals.
KLIA customs director Datuk Chik Omar Chik Lim said the drugs were seized on Aug 3 and 8 at the KLIA arrival hall.
"We managed to intercept three drug smuggling attempts into our country based on surveillance and intelligence with our counterparts in India and Lagos," Chik Omar said during a press conference at the KLIA Customs today.
In the first case, customs officers confiscated 2.548kg of ketamine worth RM95,850 stashed in nine packets of macaroni in an unclaimed parcel from Lagos on Aug 3.
"The parcel had arrived on July 27 and the recipient did not turn up to pick it up. We tried to call the contact number on it but there was no response," he said, adding that they are trying to track down the owner of the parcel.
He said the three suspects were detained on Aug 8 upon arrival from Chennai, India.
He said a 56-year-old woman was picked up by customs personnel at about 7.45am when she arrived at the arrival hall.
"We seized her luggage which contained 5.115kg of methamphetamine worth RM971,850.
"Initial investigations also revealed that the woman has been in and out of the country four times, purportedly for involvement in a textile business," he said.
Chik Omar said the other two suspects, a married couple, were also detained on the same day at about 7.40am.
"We uncovered 10.17kg of methamphetamine worth RM1,932,300 in their luggage, hidden in special compartments.
"The husband, 42, has been in and out of the country 20 times since 2013 while his wife, 34, has entered Malaysia nine times since last year," he said.
All three suspects have been remanded to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
