KUALA LUMPUR: Police arrested a 37-year-old man who is suspected of being a senior member of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) on Aug 7.
The suspect was arrested by Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division during an operation in the city, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar in a statement today.
Khalid said the man, a Sri Lankan national, had entered the country in December 2012 using a social visitor's pass.
Based on initial police investigations, the suspect had extorted other Sri Lankans here to fund and revive the LTTE terrorists struggle back in Sri Lanka.
"Based on interrogations, he was also involved in a credit card fraud syndicate masterminded by foreign nationals," said Khalid.
He was detained under Section 15 (1) (C) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for over staying.
Khalid said the suspect was deported to Sri Lanka on Aug 14 for further action by the Sri Lankan authorities.
