Najib: M'sians must defend definition of human rights

Malaysia needs to defend the definition of human rights, even if it is not in line with the universal definition.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak (pix) said that human rights should be defined according to the context of Islam and syariah in the country.
"Even if this is difficult to defend at the international level, we should defend the definition in the country," he said, noting that lately, there is a rise of extremist and liberal groups which are trying to dominate the majority of the country's population.
"These groups, are hiding behind the facade of human rights to approve their acts which deviate from Islamic teaching.
"Such groups includes the Islamic State (IS) and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community (LGBT) are targeting the younger generation to spread their ideologies - and it seems like they have managed to influence them," he said.
Najib said he viewed the wasatiyyah (moderation) approach as the best method to curb such understanding.
"Therefore, efforts to empower the youths with wasatiyyah have to be carried out in a serious, organised and continuous manner," he said, adding it could be an important module in National Service.
Speaking at the launch of the International Wasatiyyah Seminar 2015 in Inspen, Najib pointed out that the government is committed to instil wasatiyyah understanding in the country's development.
"It should not be a mere slogan, but it should be lived out and experienced by the people," he said.
He said the wasatiyyah policy will cover six strategic fields – education and youth; economy and development; administration and law; unity and social; politics and governance; and safety and security.
