KUALA LUMPUR: A man who lost his identity card four years ago got the shock of his life when he was slapped with an outstanding bill of more than RM20,000 from Telekom Malaysia (TM).
Siah Chee Kong, 35, who said he lost his identity card twice between 2008 and 2010, said on Dec 11, 2011, he received a letter from TM demanding payment of RM4,816.
"I was stunned upon receiving the letter as I am sure that I did not register for a TM account.
"I'm quite certain that the perpetrator had been using my IC to create the accounts," he told reporters during a press conference at the MCA Public Complaints and Services department here today.
Siah said after continually being harassed by debt collection agencies, hired by TM, he went to the Petaling Jaya TM headquarters and found that a total of 28 TM accounts were registered under his name.
He made a total of five complaints to TM from 2011 to 2015 which is still under investigation.
Siah said on Aug 10, a TM officer from Johor notified him that his name had been blacklisted.
"Eight days later, a debt collector came to my house in Johor, asking me to pay RM16,000 for seven outstanding accounts," he said.
Siah said upon requesting the printed bills from TM, he noticed that the name "Law Aik On" was printed on it.
He has since lodged three police reports at the Kelana Jaya and Kempas police station.
Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong urged TM to provide a full explanation on the matter.
