1,000 Rela to be deployed for Bersih 4.0

PETALING JAYA: Rela will deploy some 1,000 officers for the Bersih 4.0 rally over the weekend, an increase from its initial 600.
Its director-general Kamariah Mohd Noah said the decision was made after a committee meeting with the National Security Council (MKN) earlier.
"During the early stages, we planned to deploy 600 personnel. But after the meeting we decided to increase the number to 1,000," she said when contacted by theSun today.
"Having said that, we are always ready to assist in any way possible to maintain the safety and security of the public and the country," she added.
Kamariah said the 1,000 personnel recalled for duty will be those who are based in Kuala Lumpur, and also surrounding areas in Selangor.
It is believed that the upcoming Bersih 4 rally will see a record number of protesters taking to the street compared to previous ones, with over 2,000 policemen also being deployed for the two-day demonstration.
Kamariah was however unimpressed by the decision to hold the rally just a day before the country's National Day celebration, which will also take place at Dataran Merdeka.
"Why do it on the eve of National Day? If they really love the country, why did they choose to do it at this time? They can still hold the rally next week," she added.
