Tap into founding spirit of nation

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians need to embrace the founding spirit of the nation to remind themselves of their duty and commitment to the country.

Gerakan president Datuk Mah Siew Keong (pix) said the rakyat must show unity, strength and vitality that was once proudly possessed and professed during the dawn of nationhood.

"These national ethos must not be casually forgotten nor taken for granted," Mah said in his National Day message, here today.

The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department also said Malaysians must not lose traction and momentum by submitting to rival distractions in the nation's quest for continued advancement.

"Our aspiration and commitment to become a great nation must not be defeated by an antagonistic few who I term as anti-Malaysian.

"In times of difficulty and hardship, our sense of direction and mission must remain clear, focused and determined," he said in a statement.

He also stressed that divisive and polarising politics must discontinue to make way for truthful reconciliation and amelioration.

"Let us revisit the National Day spirit, embrace and celebrate solidarity, understanding, togetherness and humanity to all Malaysians.

"This year's National Day comes at a rather difficult time but yet it also comes at the right time to remind us of our unfailing love, devotion and appreciation to our beloved country - Malaysia," he said.
MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said: “Since independence, we have proven our worth as a land of many races, traditions, cultures and creeds. Now, as we face new trials and economic challenges, I urge my fellow citizens to remember the determination and unwavering belief of our founding fathers. The belief that together, there is much we can achieve for as long as we remain united.”
He called on Malaysians to be united to strive to make Malaysia a stronger nation.
“At the end of the day, we are all Malaysians. Rather than heed those who seek to divide us with thoughtless words and actions, let us instead break down walls of distrust and disunity as we work together to build a better nation, economically and socially,” he said.
Liow said it is time to rise above and protect “our greatest strength, our multiculturalism as we strive to evolve into a developed, mature society.” – Bernama
