KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad made a second surprise appearance at the Bersih rally today, where he reiterated his call for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak's resignation.
Speaking to the crowd at the rally, Dr Mahathir said he was there to support the call of Malaysians for Najib's resignation, over the 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) issue and the RM2.6 billion deposit into his personal account.
Dr Mahathir said he was not there to support Bersih, but the people at the rally and their aims.
"I am here for the Malays, Chinese and Indians who are frustrated with the current leadership," he told throngs of supporters and media, adding that many people had gone to see him and urged him to act.
"The Prime Minister has to step down because he has cheated the country," he said, alleging that Najib had abused his position and powers to dismantle various government apparatus especially those investigating the issues.
He also urged all Umno members and divisions to stand up for what is right and demand for Najib's resignation.
Dr Mahathir stressed that the choice to get Najib out is in the hands of the people.
"Urge your respective MPs to support the no-confidence vote against Najib. If they don't do so, tell them they will not be elected again," he added.
Dr Mahathir, had earlier been mobbed by thousands of rally participants as he made his way from the Pasar Seni LRT station about 4.30pm, accomanied by his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali and former law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim.
