KUALA LUMPUR: The objective of Bersih 4.0 is to initiate institutional reforms, not overthrow the government, said Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah.
"If these reforms are not implemented, then it will not matter if the government in power is Barisan Nasional or the Opposition, as the same problems we have faced for 58 years will inevitably crop up again," she said during the second day of the rally today.
Maria also dismissed comments made on social media that the majority of rally goers were Chinese.
"People will try to analyse that, about the non-Malays protesting. But I do not think so," she said.
Maria said the low turnout of Malays could perhaps be due to the fear instilled in them in the run up to the rally.
"We will not know who has come in support. But people will come regardless," she said, adding that there should not be any attempts to split people into different ethnic groups while fighting for reform.
Meanwhile, Maria said the crowd turnout on the final day of the Bersih 4.0 rally was estimated at 300,000.
