GEORGE TOWN: Encouraged by the Bersih 4 rally in Dataran Merdeka in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur, a loose group of Bersih supporters teamed up to hold several impromptu rallies around Penang.

The first rally was held at Taman Sri Rambai at about 9am before the group of between 100 and 300 moved to Jalan Song Ban Kheng.

The rally-goers, decked in the signature yellow shirts, then headed to the Sunway Carnival Mall in the afternoon.

The group then left for Taman Mutiara in Bukit Tengah before heading home by 4.30pm.

A participant, BC Jee, said the rallies were not planned but it was organised through social media.

He said rally goers wanted a clean and transparent government and revealed that he himself had been to the rally at Selangor on Saturday.

“We want good governance,” he said when contacted.

Central Seberang Perai district police chief ACP Rusli Mohd Noor said no untoward incidents happened.

“There were about 100 persons involved, no arrests so far,” he said when contacted.

Meanwhile a message was circulated via social media that a rally would be held on the eve of National Day at Persiaran Karpal Singh.
DAP Tanjong MP and Penang DAP Youth chief Ng Wei Aik has nixed the suggestion that the message was circulated by him.

“The activity is an unofficial event organised by the supporters of Bersih and not DAP,” he told theSun via text.
