GEORGE TOWN: A senior citizen sustained multiple injuries caused by glass shards from a louvered window when three youths allegedly hired by a loan shark hurled firecrackers into her home in the Bayan Baru Jalan Tengah Flats near here early today.
Zaoyah Mamat, 67, was injured in the eyes, face and neck in the 2.30am incident.
She was warded at the Penang Hospital where her condition was reported stable.
Initial police investigations have not ruled out that her 50-year-old son's failure to settle a four-year-old loan obtained from a loan shark could have fuelled the firecracker attack.
Barat Daya police chief, Supt Lai Fah Him said witnesses saw three youths on two motorcycles hurling lit firecrackers in the direction of the flat located on the ground floor, where Zaoyah stayed with her son.
He said her son, who worked as an operations assistant at a nearby secondary school had borrowed RM3,000 from a money-lending agency, four years ago.
Lai said the agency had demanded a payment of RM18,000, including 'interest' from Zaoyah's son, failing which he was threatened with harm via letter.
"Zaoyah's son told the police that he saw the window ablaze after hearing the sound of something being hurled at the flat, followed by explosions caused by firecrackers.
"The explosions caused several glass panes on the louvered window to shatter, injuring his mother," he told reporters here. – Bernama
