GEORGE TOWN: Some 45 vehicle owners and passengers were hauled up by the police during "Ops Samseng" for committing traffic offences between 12am and 5am today.
Northeast district police chief ACP Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said the five hours operation, led by an officer and 19 policemen were held at Leburaya Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu, Jalan Bukit Gambir, Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, Jalan Sungai Dua, Jalan Pekaka, Jalan Lip Sin, Jalan Masjid Negeri, Gelugor Roundabout, Padang Kota Lama and around George Town areas.
He said the operation was mounted following public tip-off that a group of road gangsters were trying to gather at Padang Kota Lama to initiate an illegal road racing.
"With the arrest of 45 people out of the 114 picked up, we averted an illegal road race," said Mior adding those detained were aged 18 years and above.
"Police also seized 11 motorcycles out of the 88 vehicles screened," he added.
Mior said they also issued 257 summons for various traffic offences such as driving without valid licence, and expired road tax.
