PETALING JAYA: Except for some incidents in Bukit Bintang and Petaling Street, the red shirt rally today proceeded smoothly.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Tajuddin Md Isa had put the crowd at 35,000 for the gathering while media estimated about 80,000 participants.
“Generally, the rally went on smoothly,” Tajuddin said when contacted by theSun.
“Except for some parts, especially in Bukit Bintang and Petaling Street, but the police managed to control the situation,” he added.
Tajuddin added the final figure on the numbers arrested during the gathering will be announced later.
Today, police were forced to fire water cannons on the protesters in Petaling Street, when the 1,000-strong crowd defied orders to stay away from the area.
Earlier, a tensed situation occurred in Bukit Bintang as the crowd argued over the route they were supposed to take to Padang Merbok.
Tajuddin also confirmed that two police personnel suffered minor injuries while on duty during the rally.
"The situation in the city was brought under control by 8pm with rally participants dispersing gradually," he added.
He assured city residents that police will ensure Kuala Lumpur remains safe and law and order is maintained at all times.
Tajuddin added that two rally participants, aged 24 and 30, were arrested for taking part in an illegal assembly.
They are being investigated under Section 143 of the Penal Code.
Meanwhile, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, in a tweet today said: "Syabas @PDRMsia KL dan Semua Pasukan Bantuan. Kita 'buta warna' Kuning ke, Merah ke, yg tak mematuhi Undang2 akan dikenakan tindakan" (Congratulations to PDRM and all other agencies. We are colour blind, whether yellow or red, those who flout the law will face action).
