IPOH: The call from former MCA president Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik for Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak's resignation as Prime Minister is Ling's personal view, said party secretary-general Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan (pix).

Ong said Dr Ling's statement does not reflect the MCA's stand which fully supports the leadership of Najib as Prime Minister and Barisan Nasional chairman.

"Even though Dr Ling was a former party president, his statement does not represent the party. As this is a democratic country, he is entitled to state his view.

"We respect Dr Ling as a former party leader and his views may influence some party members but we will contain the matter as it is not only about MCA but the solidarity of Malaysia," he said.

He was replying to questions from reporters after opening the 23rd Tai Chi Programme at Sekolah Menengah Shen Jai, here today.

Ong who is also Second International Trade and Industry Minister was asked to comment on Dr Ling's statement which supported the call of former Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for Najib to resign.

In this regard, he reminded BN component parties not to issue statements which could fan anger among the multiracial community in Malaysia.

"What is the benefit of BN component party leaders issuing conflicting statements against each other? This is a most challenging time for BN.

"If we want BN to remain as the ruling party, this should not be happening, especially among party leaders who hold positions in the government. This will tarnish the party's image," he added.

Ong said the differences of opinions among BN leaders should not be expressed openly. Instead the issues should be discussed to find a solution.
He said if such a situation was allowed to worsen, it would affect the confidence and support of the people for BN.
“When we wrongly issue a statement, it is better to ask for forgiveness and admit what has happened.
“We should not be issuing controversial statements as they could cause the people and party members to be unhappy with us,” he said. – Bernama
