KUALA LUMPUR: Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said there were six to seven leaders in the country the party was monitoring and if there was a need to conduct an investigation, a letter would be sent to the disciplinary committee.
Declining to elaborate further, he said that while former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad continued to criticise the Prime Minister, he is still seen as a respected leader and entitled to his views.
"Sometimes the stories we hear can be different. On Dr Mahathir wanting Najib (Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak) to be removed, that is his personal opinion. I've also heard on his website chedet.com that he's 'attacking' me. Never mind, I'm only doing my job as the (Umno's) secretary-general.
"In the end, we'll know which one is good and bad. Let's stop creating friction between the veterans and current leaders," he said in a press conference after launching the fifth affordable housing scheme (Rumawip) in Kepong's residential area here.
He was responding to a question why Umno had not taken action against Dr Mahathir who has been issuing statements against Najib and among others the handling of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
He added with 3.5 million members in Umno having different opinions, the deputy prime minister, leaders of the three wings and branch leaders have been tasked to keep the member duly informed during their internal meetings which started two weeks ago in the Federal Territory.
On Pasir Salak MP Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman's alleged remark of wanting to "slap" any Chinese individuals who voiced their complaints to the authorities, Adnan said that he (Tajuddin) did not mean it literally.
He also said a lawyer had since been engaged to reply to former Umno supreme council member Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah's letter.
This is in response to Saifuddin who questioned the need to explain himself to the committee.
Umno had submitted a show-cause letter to Saifuddin after he attended Pakatan Harapan's launch last week as an observer.
