KUALA LUMPUR: Federal police together with the Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (STING) scored a huge success after crippling a major drug smuggling syndicate with the arrest of three people and seizure of 469kg of ganja worth RM2 million.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) director Datuk Seri Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said the trio were arrested in two separate raids carried out on Oct 4 around Kuala Selangor.
He said the suspects, who are locals, are in their 30's.
"They (suspects) were nabbed during two separate vehicle inspections which were conducted at 8.30am in Kuala Selangor.
"We also recovered three Toyota luxury cars and equipment and tools that can be used to stash drugs in smaller amounts," said Mohd Mokhtar at a press conference in Bukit Aman today.
Checks also found that the suspects had previous criminal records.
He said the syndicate marketed the drugs to dealers and pushers around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.
"We believe that the drugs were brought in from numerous neighboring countries," he said.
All the suspects have been remanded for seven days till Oct 17 and the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which upon conviction carries the death penalty.
Meanwhile, Mohd Mokhtar said from Jan 1 to Sept 30, police arrested 138,599 individuals and seized 1,338kg of syabu, 37kg ketamine, 1,178 kg ganja, 636kg heroin, 384,624 ecstasy pills, 489,280 Yaba pills and 1,973,796 Eramin 5 pills worth RM210.36 million.
