KUALA LUMPUR: It was a case of mistaken identity as cars with identical number plates have left one driver confused as he kept getting summonses that did not belong to him.
Tang Wai Yee, a 75-year-old retiree, was in shock one morning as he had received an Automated Enforcement System (AES) summons for speeding at KM204.6 of the North-South Expressway.
"Since I am a retiree, I never drive my car outside the Klang Valley," he said adding that the car is registered under his name.
What made matters all the more befuddling was the image that was taken by the AES was not Tang's car, but another car bearing the exact same number plate as his own.
Tang drives a silver coloured Hyundai GetZ 1.4, while the car in the AES was the same model but red in colour.
After receiving the AES summons, Tang subsequently received three more summonses from the police and the Road Transport Department which did not belong to him.
"One of the summonses was for driving with an expired licence, another for driving without a licence and the third one was for a parking offence committed in Kampar," he said, adding that he had never taken the car to Kampar before.
MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong said that Tang was fortunate the AES takes a picture of the car committing the offence.
"Now we have tangible proof that there is another car out there with the same number plate as Tang's car," he said.
"I appeal for the other party to come forward so I can assist them in any legal and technical way," he said.
