More red shirt rallies will threaten racial ties, says Nur Jazlan

KUALA LUMPUR: The upcoming Melaka Raya and anti-Selangor government red shirt rallies will not benefit the nation and will pose a threat to race relations.
Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said such rallies are unnecessary, especially when its objective is to promote oneself at the expense of public peace.
"There are certain parties that are taking advantage of an already tense situation to demonstrate for reasons of self-promotion.
"I think this is unnecessary as it will threaten public peace and bring no benefits to the country," Nur Jazlan told a press conference at the 4th General Police and Special Equipment Exhibition at the Putra World Trade Centre today.
He pointed out that the Malacca Raya rally on Oct 10, led by army veteran Mohd Ali Baharom, and the anti-Selangor government rally in Ampang on Oct 18, led by Umno Sungai Besar chief Datuk Jamal Md Yunos is illegal.
Nur Jazlan said this is because they had not asked for permission to use their respective venues as required under the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA).
Meanwhile, Nur Jazlan said the Home Ministry is currently ironing out the details on how to accommodate about 3,000 Syrian refugees fleeing the war-torn country over the next three years.
"We are preparing to take 3,000, but that number is not final. We are currently working on a mechanism to facilitate their arrival. We have a model for that from when we took in Bosnian refugees years ago," he said.
Nur Jazlan added that the Home Ministry is still determining the logistics, legalities, and costs involved.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak pledged at the United Nations General Assembly on Oct 1 that Malaysia will be taking in 3,000 Syrian refugees over the next three years.
Ask to comment on the Conference of Rulers calling for a quick resolution of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) issue, Nur Jazlan simply said their views must be respected.
The Conference of Rulers on Tuesday urged the government to complete investigations into 1MDB as soon as possible and bring the perpetrators to justice.
