MH370: Police have contacted Philippine to verify plane parts (Updated)

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian police have contacted their Philippine counterpart to verify claims that a plane part found in the Southern Philippines was of the missing MH370.
"There was no photograph to support the claim. So, we have asked our counterpart in the Philippines to check whether there was such wreckage," Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said today.
On Saturday, a 46-year-old audiovisual technician reported that his relative and a few others had discovered aircraft wreckage with a Malaysian flag painted on it at the Philippines island of Tawi Tawi.
They also reportedly found human bones at the scene and skeletal remains in the pilot's chair, along with a Malaysian flag found in the wreckage.
This new discovery could spark fresh investigations after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak had announced on Aug 6 that the flaperon found on the Reunion island in the Indian Ocean was conclusively confirmed to be from MH370.
Tawi-Tawi is 7,595 km from Reunion Island.
MH370 went missing on March 8 last year, less than an hour after taking off from Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
The Beijing-bound flight was declared an accident. All 239 passengers and crew members were presumed to be dead by the government early this year.
Meanwhile, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai urged the public not to spread rumours or speculate on the MH370 issue following the latest claims of the discovery of aircraft wreckage in southern Philippines.
Instead, Liow hoped the public could wait for verification and news from the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA).
“I have received news about the report and following that I have instructed DCA to verify its authenticity. Until then, I call upon all parties not to speculate because speculation will not bring any benefits,” Liow told reporters during a press conference after the closing of MCA annual general meeting today.
Liow, who is also MCA president, said up till this moment he has not received any news from DCA or any authority on the matter.
