PETALING JAYA: Highway concessionaires will not waive or reduce toll charges during peak hours.
The concessionaires will however channel its funds from the recently announced toll hike into upgrading its roads and services along all its highways to ensure better traffic management.
There have been calls by certain quarters to waive toll charges during peak hours as highways are supposed to shorten travel time, and not prolong it due to congestions at tolls.
Lebuhraya Kajang-Seremban (Lekas) source told theSun despite not having any plans to waive or reduce toll charges during peak hours, it will open up additional manual lanes to address traffic congestion at its toll plazas.
The source added that with the surplus of cash in flow due to the toll hike, they will use the funds to install street lightings all along its highway roads by end of the year.
"Before we can carry out with this upgrading, we also have to clear up all our debts that we have," she said.
Another highway concessionaire Lingkaran Trans Kota Holdings Bhd (Litrak) source told theSun they will also use the supply in upgrading signal lights and ensuring better traffic management along its highways, especially during peak hours.
"We will also use the money to carry out research to find out the root cause for congestions during peak hours, as that is the most congested time of the day," he said.
He added that prior to the toll hike, Litrak had spent almost RM1 billion from their own pocket to maintain and upgrade their highways.
