PUTRAJAYA: The government is keen to learn from South Korea about its metropolitan intelligent transport system (ITS) with a possibility of implementing the technology in Malaysia.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Aziz Kaprawi told theSun that high-ranking officials from South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MLIT) have recommended South Korea's efficient and safe transport and traffic system for expressways and urban roads in Malaysia.
"The South Koreans have developed one of the most impressive ITS in the world. We are interested to learn from them about this smart transport system which coincides with the government's future blueprint for a speedy, convenient and safe transport service," said Aziz.
He said the matter was discussed during a bilateral meeting with MLIT senior executives during the 9th Apec Transportation Ministerial Meeting in Cebu, Philippines.
Aziz explained intelligent transport systems are a combination of cutting-edge technology such as electronic control and communications integration alongside real-time traffic information.
On a related matter, he also confirmed that the South Korean government would submit an official bid for the High-Speed Rail (HSR) project linking Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
"South Korea want to share their expertise and experience on the HSR construction and rail technology with us. They are willing to provide transfer of technology for the HSR project, among other things," said Aziz.
