Matta calls for use of security scanners, says pat-down 'revolting'

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) called on the airport police to use scanners instead of frisking air travellers.
Its president Datuk Hamzah Rahmat said if safety ought to be given top priority, the airport police team should be equipped with scanners and not use hands to run over a person's body.
"A pat-down by a male officer can be revolting and unacceptable by most people.
"This year, we are aiming to attract 29.4 million foreign visitors. All our slogans to portray a good image of our country can come to naught if tourists are not treated with decorum," he said in a statement today.
Hamzah further pointed out that people everywhere form a lasting impression when they see law enforcement officers stop and frisk suspects on the street.
"Doing the same would make air travellers feel that they are suspects. However, they would be appreciative if scanners are used and even grateful for the safety and security precautions taken. Our airports should also be equipped with scanners to detect body temperature which is critical to stem any disease outbreak and epidemic," he said.
On Tuesday, Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi said using bare hands to do body checks are better in detecting explosives.
However, he was quick to point out that the security personnel do not "grope" the passengers or touch any private areas as they are trained to do the checks properly.
