KUALA LUMPUR: The Communications and Multimedia Ministry, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), will advise the National Security Council (NSC) regarding social applications associated with external threats.
Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Jailani Johari said this was because issues related to external threats, even via social media and online, were under the purview of the NSC.

"If there is any external threat as a result of the use of the social application such as Google Map and Waze for location search which the data have been provided by external parties, NSC should view the matter as a whole.

"However, the ministry is working with related agencies to advise the NSC in terms of social media and communications," he said in reply to a supplementary question from Datuk Irmohizam Ibrahim (BN-Kuala Selangor) in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

Irmohizam had wanted to know the government's efforts to curb leakage of information and secrets to outsiders through Google Map and Waze.

To a question from Datuk Raime Unggi (BN-Tenom) on the level of personal data protection in social media, Jailani said the use of Google Map and Waze was subject to the privacy policy between the service provider and the user.

"The user must not reveal too much of their personal data to the public," Jailani said.

To another question, from Sim Tze Tzin (PKR-Bayan Baru), on the government's efforts to curb websites which might threaten national security, Jailani said the ministry had not received any complaint on the matter so far. – Bernama
