KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 2,256 individuals were conferred honorary titles at the federal level, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
In a parliamentary written reply, she said that the figure also includes recipients that are already deceased.
A total of 85 individuals were conferred with the "Seri Maharaja Mangku Negara" and "Seri Setia Mahkota" awards which carry the title Tun.
Another 1,020 individuals were awarded with the "Panglima Mangku Negara" and "Panglima Setia Mahkota" which carry the title Tan Sri.
The remaining 1,151 individuals were awarded with "Panglima Jasa Negara" and "Panglima Setia Diraja", which carry the title Datuk.
Azalina said this in reply to Nga Kor Ming (DAP – Taiping) who had wanted the government to provide an explanation following the royal address by the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar that there are too many individuals carrying the title Datuk.
On the conferment at the state level, Azalina said it is the prerogative power of the Rulers and the Yang di-Pertua Negeri.
“The record or recipients is managed by the respective state secretariats,” she said.
