100 gather in peaceful Sg Besi protest

KUALA LUMPUR: Approximately 100 participants congregated for the #ShutdownSungaiBesi protest last night, to demand for the toll hike to be reversed.
The number was a far cry from the anticipated 50,000 which were expected by the organiser prior to the protest.
This was also far less than the 500 police and Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel who were on standby on both sides of the Sungai Besi Toll as early as 8pm.
The participants had gathered at a Shell Petrol station nearby the toll around 9pm, before moving the crowd to an area just after the Sungai Besi toll plaza.
The protest, however, was a peaceful one, without any untoward incidences throughout.
Among those who were present were Parti Amanah Negara deputy president Salahuddin Ayub, Amanah youth chief Sany Hamzan and protest organiser Shazni Munir Ithnin.
On Wednesday, police have urged the public not to join the rally, with Serdang police chief ACP Razimi Ahmad, stating that it would disrupt traffic flow especially heading towards the city, as citizens make their way there to celebrate New Year's Day.
"Under Section 9(1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, this rally is against the law as it does not have a permit from the police.
"Individuals who attend the rally could be charged under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, which upon conviction could see them fined up to RM10,000," he said.
Meanwhile, when contacted by theSun last night, Razimi Ahmad said no arrest was made during the rally.
"They adhered to the rules and instructions provided by the personnel and of course we did the best we could in matters pertaining security concerns," he said.
