Ukrainian woman detained for trafficking drugs disguised as candies

GEORGE TOWN: Chocolate candies wrapped up in various colours turned out to be cocaine as police detained a 22-year-old Ukrainian woman at the domestic arrival hall in Penang International Airport (PIA) today.
State Narcotics Department chief Supt Guan Beng Kang said the woman carried the narcotics wrapped up nicely in plastics.
State Narcotics Department chief Supt Guan Beng Kang said the drug mule nabbed about 11am after flying from Kiev, Ukraine to Dubai, United Arab Emirates on Dec 29 and transitted in Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) before boarding a domestic flight to Penang.
He said this is the suspect's first time into the country and was entering via a tourist visa.
Supt Guan believe the woman is operating with a syndicate and investigators are still probing for clues.
"The 2.1kg of narcotics seized is worth RM500,000 and was meant for local distribution," he told a media conference at the police headquarters today.
The suspect have been remanded until Jan 7 for further investigations under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
