GEORGE TOWN: The Royal Malaysian Navy support ship KD Seri Indera Sakti is in town for resupply before continuing on a mission in the Malacca Straits.

Lieutenant Commander Mohd Kamal Irfan Hassan Sabri said the ship was en-route from the naval base in Lumut, Perak.

He said the ship was involved in several operations with the latest in 2013 when troops and supplies were deployed to Sabah during the Lahad Datu intrusion then.

He said the ship also saw action in the Gulf of Aden, off the Somalia coast, in December 2008 as part of international anti-piracy efforts in the region.

"The ship was also deployed to assist in aid operations during the 2004 tsunami," he said in briefing today after media tour of the vessel.

KD Seri Indera Sakti was commissioned in 1980 and serves as a multi-purpose command support ship (MPCSS) in the Malaysian Navy.

The 100m long ship is equipped with numerous logistical facilities including vehicle decks and a decompression chamber and is armed with a 57mm surface gun and a 20mm gun on the upper deck.
