KUALA LUMPUR: All lock-ups in police stations nationwide will soon be equipped with the Self-Monitoring Analytic Reporting Technology (SMART) Lock-up closed circuit television (CCTV) system to avoid any untoward incidents such as custodial deaths, suicide attempts, and also fights.
Bukit Aman management director Datuk Zulkifli Abdullah said the system has already been implemented at 57 lock-ups and would be set up in stages at all lock-ups nationwide.
He said that in developing the system, the police had collaborated with Mimos Bhd, the national research and development agency and the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam).
"The SMART Lock-up is not only about technology. In developing the system, we sought Suhakam's view on issues such a privacy and other fundamental human rights aspects," he said at the launch of the system at the Jinjang central police lock-up here today.
Zulkifli said the SMART Lock-up system had successfully completed its 15-month pilot run at the central police lock-up.
"We hope that with this system, public perception towards the police will change for the better," he said.
Mimos president and chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Abdul Wahab Abdullah said RM1 million was spent to complete the system at the Jinjang central police lock-up, while RM3.5 million was spent to implement the system at 57 lock-ups nationwide.
