AIRASIA and AirAsia X recently held a community event as part of its #GREEN24 campaign – a climate awareness movement that educates and promotes climate action. The event was a part of a group-wide awareness movement across its global offices that aimed at conserving energy, raising awareness on climate change and working towards developing a sustainability-conscious culture within AirAsia and the industry.
In Kuala Lumpur, the event was held at APW Bangsar and featured a marketplace where environmental organisations executed public awareness programmes on the effects of climate change as well as educated and promoted climate action. This included climate movement group Power Shift Malaysia that shared on the harsh reality of climate change and ways on how Malaysians can take proactive steps to reverse it. Besides that, there were activities such as collection of recyclable items. Four categories of recyclable items were collected including paper, plastic, aluminium and used clothes and all items collected were segregated and delivered to Tzu Chi Foundation’s recycling centre.
AirAsia Berhad CEO Aireen Omar said, “The #GREEN24 movement was launched as a regional initiative across Asean and beyond to raise the profile of climate change effects in this part of the world. We can change climate change, and we truly believe that the lifestyle change should really start from ourselves and we need to make sure the people around us are environmentally conscious, reduce wastage and take active steps in conserving the environment.”
All across Malaysia, all AirAsia offices conducted activities such as beach, park and hill cleanups as well as recycling drives to further promote good environmental habits among its staff and the public. Thai AirAsia staff held a community beach cleanup, while offices in Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia held educational programmes about recycling.
“Throughout the region, all of AirAsia’s offices carried out activities aimed at raising awareness to combat climate change. In Kuala Lumpur, we wanted this event to be a platform where the community can get together, take active steps by sending in recyclable items to us, and learn and experience ways to conserve the environment. For AirAsia, our commitment towards climate action is beyond this community event. We have taken proactive steps in our operations to ensure we reduce our carbon footprint,” she added.
AirAsia’s #GREEN24 campaign was first launched last November as part of the airline’s corporate social responsibility initiatives throughout the Asean region.
