GEORGE TOWN: The Jelutong landfill caught fire as smoke could be seen billowing from the dumpsite along Lebuhraya Tun Dr. Lim Chong Eu earlier today.
State Environment committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said the landfill caught fire at about 11am.
He said the fire spread fast due to the wind and weather conditions.
Phee said that the fire was brought under control at around 3pm as firemen were brought in to put out the peat fire.
"Thank God for the sudden rain," he said in a text message when contacted.
He added that the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) would submit a report on the peat fire as soon as possible.
