IPOH: Vehicle owners on road and stopping for a puff should ensure they are not smoking in a smoke-free zone.
Those caught smoking in prohibited areas will be summoned by the health enforcement officers.
On Friday and Saturday, 145 health officers who conducted their operations together with the police in 11 districts in the state issued summonses to 198 smokers.
State Health Department director Datuk Dr Juita Ghazalie said the compounds worth RM49,500 were issued to the offenders at 64 premises.
"Most of them, 104 people, were caught smoking at Rest and Recreation (R & R) areas while 51 others at public transport terminals and 30 at petrol kiosks," she said in a statement.
The officers also nabbed 13 minors for smoking.
Dr Juita said the RM250 compound fine can be settled at any district health office nationwide within 30 days failing which they will face court action where the penalty upon conviction is RM10,000 or two years imprisonment or both under the Control of Tobacco Products Regulations 2004.
"We want public places to be free of air pollution, especially caused by smokers," she added.
The Health ministry has gazetted 22 non smoking areas to create a clean environment and free of smoke from cigarettes.
Dr Juita said members of the public can call the district health offices to report people smoking in prohibited areas.
