My case should be last of its kind, says Deepa

PUTRAJAYA: S. Deepa, the Hindu mother fighting for custody of her two children, today hoped her case is the last of its kind in the country.
"I hope this does not happen to any other single mother anymore. I hope this is the last case in Malaysia. That is my answer, I cannot say anything anymore," she said after the Federal Court ruling today.
A five-man bench chaired by Tan Sri Md Raus Sharif said a non-Muslim marriage did not dissolve when one party embraced Islam.
"Separated from my child, no husband, money and work problems, I have gone through it all. And now I am separated from my son. This is not fair," said Deepa.
Earlier, the apex court had granted Deepa custody of her daughter V. Sharmila but her son V. Mithran to her ex-husband Izwan Abdullah.
It was an emotional moment for Deepa when she met her nine year-old son Mithran, whom she had not seen since April 2014.
Deepa bent down to chat with her son while Izwan was seen chatting with his 11-year-old daughter.
Deepa later hugged and kissed her son who was wearing a red T-shirt and songkok.
Deepa said she was "susah hati" (hurtful) as she did not obtain custody of her son.
"I had hoped for the court to grant me custody of both of my children," said Deepa.
"I am disappointed."
Deepa said that after the decision of the High Court on April 7, 2014, she spent a day with her son before the boy was taken away by her ex-husband.
"It is not fair. I am not satisfied," said Deepa, who lost her composure and was on the verge of breaking down.
On the other hand, Izwan agreed with the decision to grant custody of one child to each parent.
He said if the court had granted custody of both children to his former wife, it would have been hurtful for him.
