Recycling bank aims to encourage recycling among residents

    GEORGE TOWN: A recycling bank will be launched at residential flats in Penang as a form of incentive and encouragement to the residents when the implementation of waste separation at source begins this June.
    According to Penang Island City Council (MBPP) Urban Services Director Mubarak Junus, residents can bring recyclable materials to the recycling centre every Saturday where the items will be separated and weighed.
    "Residents who has been registered into the program can collect their cash from the accumulate items that they recycle every week.
    "The price of the recycle items will depend on the daily market price," he told reporters after attending the segregation at source pioneer program at Kampung Melayu Flats in Ayer Hitam which was officiated by Penang Local Government Committee Chairman Chow Kon Yeow.
    Chow in his speech earlier said the implementation of segregation at source will take effect from June 1 this year and ideas like recycling bank will help to promote the campaign.
    "It will not only help the state government's campaign but will also help the residents understand the importance of this program," he said.
    It was learned that the recycling bank in Kampung Melayu flats will be run and operated by Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) and will be introduced next to Lone Pine Apartment in Paya Terubong.
