Putrajaya and Cyberjaya to have tram service in three years

PUTRAJAYA: The government plans to build a tram service in Putrajaya and Cyberjaya within three years in an effort to improve the public transport system.
Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the tram service is a suitable alternative to overcome traffic congestion in the two areas which are experiencing rapid increase in population.
"I had a discussion with the National Economic Council recently where we see the tram as a solution to the abandoned monorail project. The tram is also cheaper," he told reporters after launching Kenduri 1Wilayah Persekutuan and Hari Keluarga Warga Putrajaya, here today.
Construction of the Putrajaya monorail system running 18km was abandoned in the middle of 2004 due to lack of funding.
Tengku Adnan expects the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) to request for proposals from companies interested in the construction of the tram system.
On another note, he said the ministry has installed closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras at 152 blocks in Putrajaya to increase the level of security in the government administration district.
"The CCTV cameras will be operated by the community of the respective blocks. This will improve cooperation between them and help to maintain security in their respective housing areas." — Bernama
