Australia issues travel advisory on Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: The Australian government issued a travel advisory today cautioning its citizens of a possible militant attack here.
The statement posted in the Australian government's website read "terrorists may be planning attacks in and around Kuala Lumpur. Attacks could be indiscriminate and may target western interests or locations frequented by Westerners. You should be particularly vigilant at this time."
The advisory also advised "Australians to reconsider the need to travel to the coastal region of eastern Sabah and exercise normal security precautions in Malaysia overall".
Kuala Lumpur police chief Commissioner Datuk Tajudin Md Isa said security is well under control as joint patrols by the police and military has been enhanced in areas with high-density of people.
However, he said hotels, shopping centres and tourists have been briefed to be on alert.
Tajudin said the public should not be unduly concerned but it is advised they should take extra precautions and notify the police should they come across anything suspicious.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak will be on a work visit this evening at the Pavillion mall in Bukit Bintang for an inspection on the patrolling zone by the military and police under the National Blue Ocean Strategy plan.
Checks with federal police showed that Najib is expected to proceed with the event as scheduled.
