MCMC blocks The Malaysian Insider

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysia Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has blocked news portal The Malaysian Insider, claiming it had violated the law.
In a three-paragraph statement released yesterday, MCMC said the "restriction" to access the TMI site was based on complaints and information received from the public.
"With regards to that, MCMC reminds news portals to not disseminate or publish articles that are not verified.
"This is because such action can cause confusion and create unwanted situations," it said.
MCMC said the ban was because TMI had violated Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998 under improper use of network facilities or network service.
TMI on its site reported that MCMC had ordered Internet Service Providers to block access to the portal for "national security" reasons.
Several readers had reportedly alerted the portal when they discovered they were unable to access the site.
