Review - Pride & Prejudice & Zombies

IT'S the 19th century in England, and a mysterious plague which transforms the dead into zombies is spreading quickly.
As the undead ravenously take over the genteel Victorians, courageous Elizabeth Bennet (Lily James) is always ready to slash zombies.
The feisty heroine, who is trained in martial arts and weaponry, is soon faced with a catastrophic situation that forces her into an alliance with Mr Darcy (Sam Riley), a handsome but obnoxious gentleman whom she dislikes but who has indisputable skills as a warrior.
Elizabeth realises that in order to save the ones she loves, she needs to cast all personal and social prejudices aside, and to unite with Mr Darcy to face the deadliest blood-soaked battle in history.
I’m personally not a fan of zombie movies, but I found this film to be so enjoyable to the point I didn’t even mind the gore.
Apart from the addition of zombies that slightly tweaked the storyline to make sense, the characters together with their personalities remain the same.
The cast was also impressive, especially Riley and James who both executed their respective roles with the added sword fighting successfully.
I am also pleased to notice that many of the lines in the film were taken from the Jane Austen’s original classic Pride and Prejudice, which was first published in 1813 – and that made things even more interesting.
The best part of the film is that despite the addition of zombies, which usually tends to make movies gravitate to the trite side, the film works brilliantly and has an overall depth to it that allows me a chance to laugh, think and even tear up a little!
While this film may appeal to the youth (because of the presence of zombies), I believe the older generation who have studied the original classic will enjoy it as well.
But don’t forget to stay on after the credits roll for something interesting!
