GEORGE TOWN: The proposed Gurney Wharf project to bring back a beach to the popular seafront here has received a warm welcome from people theSun spoke to today.
Logistics professional Chan Chew Hin, 63, said he had high expectations for the project which is slated for completion by 2020.
"This is a very exciting project and I believe the development will be good for Penang and the country," he said.
He was one of those theSun spoke to during the last day of the public viewing for the state to get feedback on the project.
Gurney Wharf will be built on land reclaimed by Tanjung Pinang Development Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Eastern and Oriental Berhad.
The land to be reclaimed is part of the RM1.04 billion Phase 2A of the 307ha Seri Tanjung Pinang 2 (STP2) project.
Another one who welcomed the development was Habib Noh, 40, who expects a more picturesque seaside once the project is completed.
"I am unable to find fault with this as this development will definitely enhance the place," she said.
The project is however not without its critics as an official tasked with collecting the feedback forms told theSun there are those who oppose the project.
"The opposition mainly comes from those staying along Gurney Drive who fear their seafront view will be blocked and their life will be disrupted by the influx of visitors," he said.
The official said they have received more than 700 responses from different sections of the public including foreigners.
"About 90% have voiced their support for the project, especially the youth, and they are looking forward to its completion," the official said.
