PETALING JAYA: Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed has called on local councils to stay out of politics.
His comment came following police action against billboards with images of jailed opposition figure Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in several local councils in Selangor.
The authorities had deemed such billboards as seditious.
He said local councils should not have approved billboards containing political messages.
"Local councils should not be involved in politics. The police will be taking action if they think these are inappropriate," he told reporters when met outside Parliament.
Nur Jazlan said the police are empowered to remove billboards if it was found carrying political content.
The controversial billboards, containing Anwar's image and wording of " Bebas Anwar", came under the limelight following a threat by Umno Sungai Besar division chief Datuk Jamal Md Yunos to burn down the billboards if they were not removed.
This prompted Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar to announce the billboards as seditious and thus should be taken down.
Nur Jazlan said the police would conduct a statewide operation in Selangor to remove the billboards.
He added political billboards could only be used during election campaigns, but still subjected to election rules.
