KUALA LUMPUR: The government should conduct a comprehensive study on ways to enhance the English proficieny in the country instead of hastily implementing any new policies, Batu parliamentarian Tian Chua said.
"The implemenation of Dual Language Programme (DLP) at selected national schools is not well thought through because if you wish to increase the level of English proficiency then it should be implemented at all national schools instead of implementing it at 300 selected schools.
"Furthermore, if the government is determined in enhancing the English proficiency then it is crucial for them to find ways to introduce and have the language taught in a better teaching method and environment and not by constantly changing policies every now and then," Tian Chua said when met at the DLP protest at Masjid Jamek LRT station earlier.
He added that if millions of ringgit was invested in drafting the Education Blueprint then we should follow strictly to what is listed there instead of simply follow something suggested by another minister.
"This type of mentality need to stop as there should be a comprehensive studies or proper recommendation on how we should improve English proficiency rather than keep pushing for the implementation of Science and Mathematic to be taught in English," Tian Chua stressed.
He then questioned why it has to be Science and Maths that need to be taught in English and not other subject like Geography, History or General Studies.
"There is no logic to it or any relations as to how the teaching of Science and Maths in English can improve your English proficiency," he said.
Tian Chua then suggested that DLP implementation should be defer or reconsider to allow for a more comprehensive and proper programme on how to improve English proficiency can be introduce.
