Selangor ruler calls for amendments to honorary title laws (UPDATED)

SHAH ALAM: To prevent the selling and abuse of honorary titles by unrecognised parties from the palace and the state government, amendments must be made to existing laws, said the Sultan of Selangor.
The Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Enactment 1962 has to be amended to curb this, the Ruler said when opening the fourth sitting of the 13th State Legislative Assembly.
"As stated in the state law, only the Sultan has the right to award titles in Selangor. I have noticed the giving, selling and abuse of honorary titles by unrecognised individuals from either the palace or the state government has became widespread. This unrecognized act is fraudulent in the eyes of the law, " said Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
"I have been told by the state government that the proposed amendment through the bill Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) (Amendment) 2016 covers unrecognised titles and imposes heavier penalties on offenders. I hope with this Bill that will be tabled in this sitting will curb this immoral and unethical activity as well as protect my sovereignty as Selangor's Sultan," the Sultan added.
Last month, the police arrested two suspects allegedly involved in fabricating and selling Selangor royal palace documents and identity cards.
Meanwhile, in face of the changes in temperature and world climate, the State Government was asked to take proactive steps so that disasters like extreme hot and dry spells or flash floods can be managed without impacting the people and the state's economy.
"Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS) must manage Selangor's water resources holistically for the welfare of the people. This is important to ensure there is sufficient water in all the dams so that water supply for homes and industries are not disturbed," he said.
The Sultan also wants all water sources, rivers, beaches and the environment to be well maintained.
"I want the concept of man as Allah's caliphs on earth to be reflected in the preservation of the ecosystem, biodiversity, flora and fauna which are God's gift to mankind."
