ASSASSIN'S Creed and The Walking Dead are just two of a few successful games which are making the jump from consoles to smartphones and bringing delight to casual gamers on the go.
Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed has been a hit for years on consoles. Until now, only spin-offs of the action adventure game had been released for mobile devices. But that has changed for iOS devices with the launch of the game Assassin's Creed Identity.
The mobile game takes users to Renaissance Italy where you can create your own assassin, evolving them from novice to master in an infinity of quests in new locations to be unlocked with customizable outfits and weapons.
Assassin's Creed Identity is a paid title, costing US$4.99 (RM19.74) in the iTunes App Store. Ubisoft has said an Android version of the game will be arriving mid-year without an exact date.
The zombie saga The Walking Dead had a big following as a comic book and TV series. And the Telltale Games video games have been successful as well. The newest spin-off is The Walking Dead: Michonne for phones and a wide range of other devices.
It tells the story of the blade-wielding character Michonne. In the first episode, Michonne joins Pete and his crew on a sailing ship searching the coastline for survivors of the zombie apocalypse.
Telltale Games are known for their interactive stories, which do not allow for much actual control of the characters, but the storylines are exciting. The first episode of the game "In Too Deep" is free of charge to play. The other five episodes of the mini-series will cost between US$15 and US$20, depending on platform.
The game is available on iOS, Android, Playstation Vita and consoles and PCs.
The Japanese role-playing game Bravely Default was a surprising success for Nintendo 3DS. That was reason enough for Square Enix to release a sequel in Bravely Second: End Layer.
End Layer takes place in the same universe as its predecessor and occurs two years after the events of the first game. Kaiser Oblivion has abducted Agnes Oblige and her bodyguard Yew Geneologia tries to find her on an epic journey through Eternia.
All of the strengths of the Japanese role-playing game were kept in End Layer and a couple new features were thoughtfully added.
For example, gamers get the ability to go to the next challenge immediately after a successful fight. Users can thereby earn extra experience points, but also lose the points they have already won.
Bravely Second: End Layer is available in shops for about US$40.
The game Bomberman has been around for decades, with its four little guys, a labyrinth and plenty of bombs. The game is also known as Dynablaster in some parts of the world - and that is the name for its release on iOS and Android.
The principle is simple and fun. Four players must manoeuvre around a series of obstacles and blow each other up. They can use the numerous dead ends on the board to trap their opponents - while trying to avoid their opponents' bombs or even being blown up by their own bombs.
Dynablaster can also be played alone but it's most fun in multi-player mode. The BBG Entertainment game is available for US$2 in most versions of the App Store. An Android version is coming soon.
Stellar Wanderer from Crescent Moon Games, meanwhile, tries to transport the space simulation genre to iOS - for US$5 or so in App Stores. The player is a pilot looking to explore the open-world universe in a so-called space opera. Gamers can choose from various missions, ranging from simple transport to dangerous battles, to earn credits to improve their ships in various ways. — dpa
