GEORGE TOWN: The private motion for the amendment of the Penang State Constitution to limit the tenure of Penang Chief Minister to just two terms will be studied by the State Legislative Assembly Speaker's Office before the decision on whether or not the motion will be debated at the State Assembly sitting next month, can be made.
Speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang said his office had received the private motion submitted by Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu of DAP and the matter would be discussed after the end of the notice period or 14 days before the State Assembly sitting begins.
"The State Assembly will be graced open by the Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abas on May 10 ... so, all assemblymen still have until April 25 to submit their motions to the office.
"On whether Teh's private motion will be debated or not, I will inform the media before the sitting," he told reporters here today.
Last Thursday, the DAP assemblyman submitted the notice of motion for the amendment of the state constitution to limit the Penang chief minister's term, on grounds that it was necessary to promote good governance or even credibility, accountability and transparency. — Bernama
