Gangster who charged into police station with parang, shot

    SERENDAH: An underworld gang member who blatantly barged into a police station to slash a man whom he had attacked earlier was subdued with a gunshot fired by a policeman here late on Sunday.
    The 32-year-old suspect collapsed to the ground after suffering a gunshot to his left knee.
    The incident led to police rounding up 29 suspected underworld thugs aged between 24 and 33 in the district.
    Hulu Selangor police chief Supt R. Subramaniam said at about 10.50pm five friends who were having a drink at a restaurant in Desa Kiambang here spotted between 15 and 20 men who were armed with sticks, parang and helmets and had arrived on motorcycles and in cars approaching them.
    He said the group set upon the friends who tried to escape from the scene.
    However, he said while three of the victims managed to flee the scene, their two friends who were caught by the thugs were slashed and beaten up by the group.
    Subramaniam said about an hour later while the escaped victims were lodging police reports at the Serendah police station, an attacker who was armed with a parang showed up and tried to confront the victims but was stopped by policemen on sentry duty.
    He said the policemen ordered the suspect to drop his weapon and give himself up.
    However, when the man became defiant and tried to force his way in, a policeman opened fire at him.
    Subramaniam said the suspect and two of his victims, both aged 24 and which his gang had attacked at a restaurant earlier were warded at the Selayang Hospital for their injuries.
    He said an operation to trace other members of the underworld in the district is ongoing.
