Actor Daniel Craig calls for funding to remove landmines
JAMES Bond-actor Daniel Craig, who serves as UN global advocate for the elimination of mines, called on the international community Monday to fund efforts to remove explosives left behind after conflicts.
Craig spoke to journalists in New York as the United Nations commemorated the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, urging countries to step up the removal of hazardous remnants of wars.
Craig said that the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS), which is a collaboration of 11 UN departments, agencies and programmes to respond to the problems of landmines, was critical to improving the changes of survival for civilians and aid workers in conflict zones.
"UNMAS provides a long-term solution to the biggest problem facing the victims of war: how to return to a normal life," the actor said. — dpa
