PETALING JAYA: Action will be taken on any evidence of wrongdoing found in the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) report on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
"Having reviewed the PAC report, I note that it shows that RM42 billion is not missing from 1MDB as had been alleged by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad," Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak said in a statement today.
"However, the report has identified weaknesses in 1MDB's capital structure and management. We must ensure that lessons are learned, and action will be taken if any wrongdoing is found," Najib added.
Najib then thanked the National Audit Department and PAC for producing a comprehensive, conclusive and definitive report.
"This report represents a consensus by the PAC members, and its findings are based on facts and hundreds of hours of reviews and investigations," he said.
Najib added that it is now clear that Dr Mahathir had made false allegations against 1MDB and he was motivated by personal interest and not national interest.
"We will continue to focus on our economic plan and strengthening the economy, which has continued to show resilience in the face of global challenges," Najib added.
Following multiple allegations made against 1MDB, the Cabinet under Najib's instruction requested the Auditor-General in March 2015 to conduct an independent investigation into 1MDB's financial accounts.
Meanwhile, 1MDB demanded that The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) immediately remove a misleading headline on one of its reports on its website.
"WSJ is currently running a headline on its website claiming that 'Malaysia parliament inquiry finds billions of dollars have gone missing from state fund 1MDB, recommends criminal probe of senior management'.
"This is an outright lie as at no point in the report is it suggested that any funds have gone missing from 1MDB nor is there any reference to a criminal probe," 1MDB said in a statement.
